You didn't think we were going to go a whole week without a new beta release did you? Private beta participants are asked to download it now.
What's New and Fixed in Spanning Sync v1.0b9:
- Alarm/reminder syncing has been removed, but will return as soon as it's more fully supported by the Google Calendar API.
- The sync.log file is now stored in the user's home directory.
- Several problems that caused failed sync sessions have been fixed.
- Several problems that caused duplicate entries for some recurrences have been fixed.
- The alert that warned, "You're about to change more than 5% of your events," which would come up after a refresh sync has been eliminated. (You'll still see it on your first sync, but not after that.)
We really need some good test coverage on this release, so even if you're not having any problems with an older beta, please download the latest version and upgrade. Thanks!

Very much looking forward to the public beta guys! Paired with the extremely handy "High Priority" menu app, this will finally make iCal useful again and bring it more fully into Web 2.0 era than .Mac ever will. (Which they haven't and probably won't!)

I'm also a new Mac user, but totally looking forward to this software, as I use GCal pretty regularly and would love to sync it with my new pretty MacBook.
Would it be safe to assume that the public beta will release the same day as when MacWorld starts? That would be an awesome start to the conference. =)

Randall,
We won't be releasing the public beta to coincide with MacWorld. News tends to get buried when it competes with announcements from Apple, especially ones as big as this year's MWSF will bring. Plus, we might need a few days to make sure Spanning Sync works with the iPhone. ;-)

Charlie

I'm looking forward to the public Beta. How does one make sure they are included?
Happy New Year,

Jamie,
Just keep an eye on the blog. When we open the public beta, we'll make the announcement here. At that time, everyone (gulp!) will be invited to use the service.

Charlie

Does Spanning Sync used an encrypted connection for logging in and transferring information between Google Calendar and iCal?
Posted by: Khürt | January 06, 2007 at 08:40 AM
Yes, the connection between the Spanning Sync application and our server is encrypted using HTTPS. The connection between our server and Google uses Google's GData protocol, which implements its own security.

Charlie

Been checking out this site for a while. Just wondering when the public beta will be available. Is it at all possible to be allowed to join the private beta.

I was wondering if Calendars I have subscribed to in iCal, say from basecamp or the Red Wings calendar can also be sent up Or is this only for Calendars "i" have created?

The zip file is nog unpacking well, maybe you can place the files in an .dmg file, like all the other software is released? More reliable i think.

Buxx,
Try downloading it again. The various versions have been downloaded thousands of times, and yours is the first report of trouble with it we've heard.

Charlie

Downloading was not the issue, the unpacking was.
But i tried it with another unpacker instead of the standard Unstuff and that worked fine.
Succes with developing further.

Does this application use Apple's SyncServices API? If I trigger a sync via iSync, will sync to Google Calendar occur along with the sync to my mobile phone, etc, etc.
Posted by: James Webster | January 17, 2007 at 06:45 PM
Yes, Spanning Sync does use Sync Services.
Select "Sync Now" from the iSync menu extra (iSync Preferences > Show status in menu bar) and all of your devices and services, including Google Calendar via Spanning Sync, will sync. It's quite slick.

Jason,
Thanks very much for your offer to help, but we're close to wrapping up the private beta period. A public version will be available soon, at which time I hope you'll join us.

I upgraded to this version, but it keeps telling me to update. Otherwise, rock solid so far. I did have to resolve a could of conflicts a few times before they clicked, it may have been that it was too much stuff for one go, as I had to delete the quad copies I was getting with one of the earlier betas.

Ted,
There was about a five-minute period there where the server was telling the client to upgrade to b10 but then pointing it to the b9 installer. That should be fixed now.
Apparently we've still got some room for improvement on our upgrade deployment process. :-)
Thanks,
Charlie
