We've just made the upgrade to v1.0b16 released earlier this week mandatory, which means if you're still running an older version you'll see an alert like the one shown here and will no longer be able to sync until you upgrade.
To upgrade automatically, simply quit and reopen the Spanning Sync preference pane. After you've upgraded, your first sync will result in a "Sync Aborted" error which you can safely ignore.
Thanks again to our beta testers—all 18,273 of you at last count!—for helping us make Spanning Sync better every day.

Mandatory upgrade is INCREDIBLY ANNOYING. Downrev version repeatedly crashing pending upgrade, dialog box popping up repeatedly, and I was offline all day yesterday, couldn't upgrade. Machine was repeatedly hosed, slowing down, etc.
Don't ever do this again, please. Nothing is worth hosing your customer's machines and making them periodically unusable.

Jeff,
I'm sorry the mandatory upgrade caused you problems. If you ever find that Spanning Sync is causing problems, you can uninstall it using the Uninstaller application included with the download and reinstall later. We realize the automated upgrade path could be smoother--we're looking at ways to make it so.
If you have any suggestions for how we could make sure our users are on the current version in a less invasive way, we'd love to hear them. You can leave a comment here, post a message to the discussion group (http://groups.google.com/group/spanningsync), or email us at feedback@spanningsync.com.
Thanks,
Charlie

Spanning Sync encountered an error.
I could never sync or log in.
I get that message.
Thanks

Martin,
Please try this:
* Open System Preferences
* With the Option key held down, click Spanning Sync
* The report will appear on your desktop in a few seconds
* Email it to beta@spanningsync.com along with a description of the problem
Thanks,
Charlie

Charlie,
First of all, thanks for a great app that truly fills a gap!
About the upgrade, you might want to have a look at how TextMate and Quicksilver do the upgrade. TM checks for the upgrade periodically and even downloads the upgrade automatically. Then it just announces about the new version, you click "Install and restart" and bang, you have the new version. No installers for you to run, no zip files to uncompress, and especially, no fatal errors popping up every once in a while.

I installed the required update and now iCal quits every time I open it, with this message:
"The application iCal quit unexpectedly.
Mac OS X and other applications are not affected." ...
I uninstalled Spanning Sync and tried to open iCal and the same thing happens. I loved Spanning Sync and would love to use it, but right now I just want my iCal back. What can I do to get iCal working again?

Charlie: can you comment on why Entourage users can't/shouldn't/oughtn't/mustn't use Spanning Sync?
Posted by: Scott | March 09, 2007 at 06:04 PM
Scott,
We've had several reports of problems from Spanning Sync users who sync Entourage with iCal, usually involving some sort of Entourage database corruption. (You can read about their experiences on the discussion group at http://groups.google.com/group/spanningsync/browse_thread/thread/ceb9d1cf2bc66bbe )
Until we can isolate and fix the problem, we're recommending that Entourage users who sync with iCal not use Spanning Sync. That being said, Entourage users who don't sync their calendars with iCal should be fine.
Regards,
Charlie

To fix you iCal problem described by Kyle above, just do this:
* Open iSync (in /Applications)
* Go to preferences
* Click Reset Sync History
* Reopen iCal

Charlie

I have installed the upgrade and i'm still getting the download the upgrade error... any thoughts?
Posted by: Jeremy Allen | March 10, 2007 at 11:14 PM
Jeremy,
What version number is showing in the Spanning Sync preference pane? It's right below the icon, and should read "v1.0b16 (143)". If not, you're not on the current version, so you might want to try logging out of your computer and logging back in (or restarting), then running the b16 installer again.
If you continue to have this problem, please email us at beta@spanningsync.com and we'll get it straightened out for you.
Regards,
Charlie

All it took was loging out and back in.
Thanks!

ONLY if you have a built-in auto updater, with the setting: Let spanning sync update in the background automaticlly when connected to the internet. THEN YOU CAN MAKE A MANDATORY UPGRADE. It's totally annoying this mandatory upgrade.

I love your product, but I really think the prices you are asking are....well.....outlandish.
I won't pay $65 for a product that essentially does very little. Granted, it's convenient as HELL, but not $65 convenient. Great job, but I'll be uninstalling and writing my own perl scripts to sync back to my BSD servers instead.
Good luck with your product.
