Google is rolling out an overhauled version of Gmail Contacts today. Among the many improvements is something we've been wanting for a long time: structured name fields ("so you can adjust titles, suffixes, and other name components"). And the best news? Spanning Sync 3 is already compatible with the updates.
Note that the new UI is not (yet?) available at the standalone Contacts URL: https://www.google.com/contacts, but is available at https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#contacts. Hopefully the kids in Mountain View will get this sorted out pronto. Also note that the change affect only Gmail and not yet Google Apps users.
Thanks, Google!
